Chapter Eleven

“Take her down, now,” Jude commands. He moves away so fast I let out a whimper of protest, but he’s back within seconds, buttoning his jeans, then hurriedly unstrapping one side of my body while Simon takes care of the other. The next thing I know, he’s lifting and carrying me to the edge of the platform, where he sits and cradles me on his lap.

Simon joins us after putting on pants. He pulls my legs across his thighs and gives me an earnest look. “Tell me what you meant, Sarah. Why do you have to leave?”

“Because I have a life in California. I have to finish college. I have a career lined up when I do. I can’t just drop it after working so hard.”

“We wouldn’t ask you to give anything up for us. You know that,” Jude says, sounding offended.

“I know, which is why this is so hard.” I rest my palm against his cheek. “I didn’t expect to see you two this summer. I thought I’d just spend a few weeks visiting my parents and then go back. But now all I want is to stay, even though I know it’s a dumb idea.”

“I don’t know about that…” Simon starts, but cuts himself off when Jude shoots him a withering look. He sighs. “When do you leave?”

“I only took three weeks off from my internship. I can’t extend it without looking like a flake, and this internship is key to earning a position when I graduate. It’s a really good starting salary, even for California. But now…” My eyes start to burn again, and I reach out and clutch Simon’s hand as the words get trapped in my throat. “The idea of leaving you…”

“Shh,” Jude says, squeezing me tighter and nuzzling my cheek. “We’ll figure it out. If nothing else, we know we need to make the most of the time we have, right?”

“I don’t want to lose you guys again.”

Simon moves around to crouch in front of us, lifting both hands to cup my face so I have no choice but to look at him. “You won’t. No matter what happens, I can promise you that much. You will never lose us. We’ll work it out. I promise.”

“It was the machine, wasn’t it?” Jude says in a subdued voice.

I stare at him, confused until I see a slight curl at the corner of his mouth and a twinkle in his eye. I laugh. “Yes, your amazing, ingenious sex machine made me fall completely and irrevocably in love with you.”

“Wait till you see Position Three.” He waggles his eyebrows at me.

I glance over his shoulder at the inert contraption, the straps dangling loose. “Guys, this is big. I can’t believe you blew off an investor last night just to spend time with me. I mean, this is the kind of thing that could make your entire careers. It’s… beyond words, how clever it is.”

“You inspired us—I hope you know that. All those experiments we tried when we were younger stuck with us.
